YouTube privacy works on two levels. One is what you publish: videos and playlists can be public, unlisted or private. The other is what your activity reveals: which channels you follow, what you like, and the long list of things you have watched and searched for. Both are easy to tighten once you know where the switches are.

Quick steps:

  1. For a video, open YouTube Studio, go to Content and change Visibility to Private or Unlisted.
  2. For a playlist, go to Content, then Playlists, open Details and set Visibility.
  3. On a computer, open Settings, then Privacy, and turn on Keep all my subscriptions private.
  4. In the same Privacy section, switch off the activities you don't want shown.
  5. In Manage all history (app) or My Activity (web), pause or set Auto-delete for your history.

Private, unlisted or public: what each one means

Choosing between the three is the decision that matters most for anything you upload. Private means only you and the people you choose can watch. Unlisted means anyone with the link can watch and pass it on, but YouTube won't advertise it. Public means anyone at all.

What happens to the video Private Unlisted Public
You can share the video's URL No Yes Yes
Surfaces in YouTube search, suggested videos or recommendations No No Yes
Listed on your channel and in subscribers' feeds No No Yes
Open to comments No Yes Yes
Can be added to a public playlist No Yes Yes

Two points are easy to get wrong. An unlisted video is hidden, not protected: whoever has the link can forward it, so it suits family clips you share with a few people, not anything sensitive. And none of the three options takes a video out of YouTube's own reach. Google says private, unlisted and public videos can all be reviewed for ad suitability, copyright and abuse prevention.

Your age sets the starting point. For creators aged 13 to 17 new uploads default to private, and from 18 they default to public. Anyone can change the setting on any video.

Change a video's visibility

On a computer: sign in to YouTube Studio, choose Content in the left menu, hover over the video, click the arrow under Visibility, pick Public, Private or Unlisted, then Save. Live uploads sit under the Live tab.

In the YouTube app (Android, iPhone and iPad): tap your profile picture, then Your videos. Next to the video, tap More, then Edit. Tap Visibility, choose a setting, then tap back and Save.

In the YouTube Studio app: tap Content in the bottom menu, then More and Edit next to the video, and change Visibility the same way.

A habit that helps: upload as Private, check the title, description and thumbnail for anything personal, and only then switch it to Unlisted or Public.

Playlists and liked videos

Playlists you own have the same three options. In YouTube Studio, go to Content, then Playlists, click Details on the playlist, change Visibility and save. In the regular YouTube site or app you can also open the You tab, go to Playlists, tap View full playlist and choose a new setting just below the playlist title. Google notes that this may not be available on supervised accounts.

Your Liked videos playlist is private, so only you can see it, while videos keep showing how many likes they have. Other activity, such as a video you liked or a channel you subscribed to, can appear in your activity feed. To hide it on a computer, open your profile picture, then Settings, then Privacy, and switch off the individual activities. On iPhone and iPad, tap your profile picture, Your channel, then EDIT CHANNEL, and use the Privacy section.

Keep your subscriptions to yourself

The channels you follow can say a lot about you. YouTube sets subscriptions to private by default, but it is worth confirming. Google gives the steps for a computer: sign in, click your profile picture in the top right, choose Settings, select Privacy on the left, and make sure Keep all my subscriptions private is on.

When it is on, nobody else can see which channels you subscribe to, and your account doesn't appear in a channel's subscriber list. If you switch it off, your subscriptions show on your channel homepage. One exception remains even with the setting on: joining a live chat open only to subscribers, or commenting on a video or Short limited to subscribers and members, shows other viewers that you subscribe.

Watch history and search history

Watch history powers recommendations. If you delete some or all of it, YouTube stops basing suggestions on those videos, and anything you watch while it is turned off stays out of the history.

In the app (Android, iPhone and iPad): tap your profile picture, then Settings, then Manage all history. From there you can:

  • browse by search or by date with the calendar;
  • remove single videos, or use DELETE for a range of time;
  • pause history in the Controls tab by unticking Include the YouTube videos you watch.

On a computer: go to My Activity, sign in, click YouTube History and Manage history. Remove items one by one or with DELETE. To pause, open the Controls tab on the left and choose Turn off. For hands-off cleanup, click Auto-delete under Manage history, pick a time range, then Next and Confirm.

Note that DELETE wipes search history from the same period along with watch history. If you watch while signed out in the app, go to Settings, then History & privacy, to clear or pause it. On a TV or game console, the Settings menu has Pause watch history and Clear watch history.

Your Google Account is the key

YouTube uses your Google Account, so whoever gets into that account gets your private videos, history and playlists too. Give that Google Account a password you use nowhere else, plus a second sign-in step. For a short routine, read password hygiene after credential leaks.

Private videos don't make your connection private

Visibility settings control which people can watch your uploads and see your activity. They don't change what travels over the network. YouTube still sees the IP address each request comes from, and your broadband provider, a café hotspot or your mobile carrier can see that the traffic is headed to YouTube, even while the history in your account is paused. A VPN gives sites and apps the VPN server's IP address instead of yours and keeps the local network from reading your traffic, which matters most on public Wi-Fi. It doesn't make you anonymous on YouTube: when you are signed in, Google knows the account is yours. What is my IP shows the address you are using now, and VPNRice apps are on the download page.

FAQ

Can someone find my unlisted video?

Not on your channel or in recommendations, and not in search unless someone adds it to a public playlist. Anyone who has the link can watch it and share it further. Use Private if only specific people should see it.

Who can watch a private video?

Only you and the people you choose. It can't be shared by link, can't receive comments and never shows in search, on your channel or in feeds.

Are my YouTube subscriptions public?

Not by default. They stay private unless you turn off Keep all my subscriptions private. Subscriber-only live chats and comments are the exception, because others can see you subscribe there.

Does pausing watch history also pause search history?

The pause control in the app is about the videos you watch. Deleting with DELETE removes both watch and search history for the chosen period, so check the Controls tab to see what is still being saved.
