What is a residential VPN?

A residential VPN is a form of VPN service that routes traffic through a residential IP address instead of through a VPN server like other regular services. This method is typically implemented based on a peer-to-peer (P2P) model, in which users share their IP addresses in exchange for access to other users' IP addresses.
Residential VPN services are considered secure because they do not use data centers, which can be compromised. By always receiving residential IP addresses from Internet Service Providers (ISPs), this rarely raises suspicion for services that prohibit or restrict VPN use.
What is a residential IP address?

Residential IP addresses are IP addresses provided by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to internet users, typically those living in residential areas. For example, if you check your IP address without using a VPN connection, you will see the address assigned to you by your ISP, i.e. your residential IP address.
Internet service providers associate user activity history with these IP addresses, making them more trustworthy. This helps minimize problems accessing various websites and services through a residential VPN, compared to using some other VPN providers.
How does residential VPN work?

Residential VPNs route your traffic through a residential IP address that is different from your actual IP. Some residential VPN services may own their own private IP network, however, most commonly users agree to share their IP address in exchange for access to other people's residential IP addresses .
This process eliminates the need for a VPN server, as devices in the network, owned by the user, interact directly to make the connection and change your actual IP address, and Protect your traffic. Simply put, every device in the network acts as a VPN server.
To become part of this network, you agree to the User Agreement or Terms and Conditions when registering to use the service. Therefore, if you do not want to share your IP with other users, make sure you read all the terms carefully before starting to use a residential VPN.
However, there aren't many significant risks with the peer-to-peer model, as long as you can trust the service provider to protect your information. The only possible downside is that your connection speed may be affected more than with a regular VPN, and you don't know what other users are doing when connected to your IP address.
What is the difference between a regular VPN and a residential VPN?

The main difference between a residential VPN and a regular VPN service lies in the IP source they assign to the user. Residential VPNs use a peer-to-peer (P2P) network and route your traffic through residential IP addresses owned by other users. In contrast, regular VPN providers use servers specifically designed to handle and route VPN traffic.
Premium VPN services like VPN Rice optimize their entire infrastructure to ensure fast and reliable connections. Meanwhile, P2P networks use an infrastructure where every peer can act as a server, leading to connection diversity and reliability between different connections.
This means that both premium and consumer VPNs tend to offer unlimited bandwidth and maintain stable connection speeds. The difference mainly comes when comparing them to free VPN services, as premium VPN providers often focus on improving user experience, and the difference in accessibility is not huge too much.
One advantage of residential VPNs is that their IP addresses are often more reliable, leading to fewer difficulties and limitations for users. The difference is more prominent when compared with free VPNs, as premium VPN providers often invest heavily to improve user experience and access quality.
Should you buy a residential VPN?

Ultimately, it's important to consider whether a residential VPN is the right choice for you. If you prefer the peer-to-peer model, this could be a good alternative to a traditional VPN, promising consistent speeds and unlimited Internet access.
However, it should be noted that there is a reason why traditional VPN services still maintain a leading position in the industry. Factors like top-notch encryption, large-scale server infrastructure, use of modern VPN protocols, and many other additional features can only be provided by premium VPN services. Therefore, if you are looking for the most comprehensive and excellent VPN experience, your choice should be just one.
